San Blas: World Capital of Wetland Birds

San Blas: World Capital of Wetland Birds

San Blas is a tiny 18th century fishing village that has become one of the top destinations anywhere in Central America for bird watching. If you join us for the San Blas World Capital of Wetland Birds tour, you will soon see why this is such a great destination for bird watching and ecotourism. In a very small area, you can see over 300 unique species of birds that make their home here, including at least 25 species endemic to this area. This is a bird watcher’s dream!

San Blas is located about three and a half hours north of Puerto Vallarta. It was once one of the most important ports on the west coast of Mexico. Today, it does not quite hold that status as an important port town, but instead is a sleepy and charming fishing village. And, as the name of this tour implies, it has become the world’s capital for wetland bird species.

What you will find in the area of San Blas is wetlands, estuaries, and mangrove lagoons that are home to the over 300 bird species that you can see here, both migratory and local. A typical roster of species that you might see during this excursion include Mexican Blue-Rumped, Parrotlets, Citreolines, Lilac-Crowned Parrots, Rufous-Bellied Chachalaca, Crested Guan, Elegant Quail, Orange-Fronted Parakeets, and Elegant Trogons. This is obviously just a small list of the species that you may encounter here.

Another aspect of this tour that makes it unique and unforgettable is the river boat excursion to the La Trova mangrove lagoon. In this part of the tour, the typical birds you might encounter include Bare-throated Tiger Heron, Mangrove Warbler, Purple Gallinules, Puaraquees, Rufous-necked Wood-rail, Boat-billed Heron, and Green Kingfishers.

Our bird watching tours are all lead by a talented and dedicated team of certified eco tour guides who are eager to share with you their passion for birds and nature.
