The gorgeous Marietas Islands are a nature lover’s ideal destination with an amazing variety of wildlife above and below the surface of the water. An array of aquatic birds nest on the islands’ rocky surface, including egrets, frigate birds, herons, gulls, boobies and pelicans. The caves and nooks of this once volcanic island provide excellent shelter for nesting for a large variety of sea birds. The bird watching alone is worth the boat trip out to Las Tres Marietas (The Three Marietas) for eco-enthusiasts, but you also have the opportunity to go snorkeling. The waters off these islands offer some of the best snorkeling in Banderas Bay (Bahia de Banderas), and perhaps, the world. The extensive coral reefs that surround Las Tres Marietas provide the perfect undersea habitat for an astounding spectrum of tropical fish and other aquatic species, including sea turtles, manta rays, sea horses, and octopi. Banderas Bay is home to more than two hundred varieties of fish, including Angelfish, Sergeant Majors, Giant Damselfish, Cortez Chubs, Moorish Idol, and Rainbow Wrasse, among others.
